Sustainability (SUST)

SUST 518. Urban Demography and GIS3 Units

Term Typically Offered: Spring Only

Prerequisite(s): SUST 101.

Description: This course will introduce students to geographic information systems (GIS) as an analytical tool with which to study urban demographic issues. The material will be geared towards students in the urban planning, public administration, and urban studies programs, with a focus on demographic data and issues frequently encountered by planners, policymakers, and policy analysts. Topics that will be covered include migration, housing and neighborhood development, segregation, and land use.

SUST 576. Sustainable Social-Ecological Systems3 Units

Term Typically Offered: Fall Only

Prerequisite(s): SUST 101, SUST 201 or SUST 202; and SUST 301; or consent of instructor.

Description: The course is designed to address the social ecological frameworks for understanding and applying sustainability concepts in both theory and practice.

SUST 602. Sustainability and the Natural Environment3 Units

Term Typically Offered: Spring Only

Prerequisite(s): Consent of instructor.

Description: This course will focus on the sustainability of natural systems including populations, freshwater, soil, and air. Required for students in the MA or MS in Interdisciplinary Studies with a Concentration in Sustainability.

SUST 632. Independent Study Sustainability1-3 Units

Term Typically Offered: Occasionally Offered

Prerequisite(s): Consent of Instructor.

Description: An independent study designed to fulfill individual graduate student needs. It offers an opportunity for graduate students to do in-depth reading and research in a particular subject, under the supervision of a faculty member.

SUST 638. Urban Justice & Policy3 Units

Prerequisite(s): For Law School students: LAW 802, LAW 804, LAW 806, LAW 810, LAW 811, LAW 803, LAW 805, LAW 807, LAW 808, LAW 812, unless approved by Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.

Description: All other students: must be a graduate student in good standing unless waived by the professor teaching the course. For other students: graduate status or permission of instructor. An interdisciplinary study of various theories and concepts of justice in cities. Students will study selected urban policy problems through the perspectives of diverse theories and concepts of justice.

SUST 649. Internship Sustainability1-3 Units

Prerequisite(s): Consent of Instructor.

Description: Course that provides practical, workplace or research experience for students in either the Master of Arts or Sciences in Interdisciplinary Studies with a Concentration in Sustainability.

SUST 650. Sustainability Seminar1 Unit

Description: Seminar course with presentations by invited guests and students enrolled in the Master of Arts or Master of Science in interdisciplinary Studies, concentration in Sustainability program.

Note: Course is repeated until Master's Candidacy.

SUST 695. Special Topics in Sustainabilty1-3 Units

Term Typically Offered: Occasionally Offered

Prerequisite(s): Consent of Instructor.

Description: Special topics course allows for a variety of emerging issues in sustainability. Open to students enrolled in the MA or MS in Interdisciplinary Studies with a Concentration in Sustainability. Course may be repeated for credit as long as the topic differs.

SUST 703. Land and Ecosystem Conservation1-3 Units

Term Typically Offered: Fall Only

Prerequisite(s): Consent of Instructor and Director.

Description: A study of issues and methods concerning the conservation of ecosystems (e.g., prairies) sensitive lands (e.g., farmland, historic areas, national parks). Issues of sustainability will receive particular attention. May be offered as a seminar.

SUST 739. Water Resources Law and Policy2-3 Units

Prerequisite(s): LAW 802, LAW 804, LAW 806, LAW 810, LAW 811, LAW 803, LAW 805, LAW 807, LAW 808, LAW 812, unless approved by Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.

Description: This course involves the study of water rights, and the policies and legal principles governing the management of water resources generally. Specific topics may vary. Topics may include riparian rights, prior appropriation systems, water use permitting systems and statutory codes, the management drainage and runoff, the law and practices of water institutions, interstate water disputes, watershed-based management, integration of water supply and water quality protections, and the control and distribution of clean drinking water supplies. May be offered as a seminar.
