Geography, Applied (BS)
Departmental Admission Requirements
There are no specific admission requirements for students in the traditional degree plan. The Change Major Request form can be found under the Academic Progress tile on ULink.
Application and Admission to the Dual BS/MS Applied Geography Pathway
Application and admission to the accelerated program is a dual process as follows:
- Accelerated Pathway Application and Admission (Sophomore/Junior Year)
- Meet with undergraduate advisor and Department of Geographic and Environmental Sciences Director of Graduate Studies to discuss interest in Accelerated program and any required pre-reqs to graduate classes.
- Check the Flight Plan for your chosen BS Applied Geography track
- Apply during the first or second semester of their Junior year* (typically on completion of 70-80 hours) using the Accelerated Pathway application form. All applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA over all courses at the time of Accelerated Pathway application.
2. Accelerated Program Application and Admission (Senior Year)
Apply to the Accelerated Program during senior year via the Graduate School* (Academic Plan code: AGEOMS_ACC). This will require:
- a graduate school application
- statement of interest
- two letters of recommendation
UofL undergraduate transcripts will be automatically uploaded into the application.
All applicants must continue to maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA during Senior year across all courses, including all accelerated hours taken towards the MS degree during Senior Year. Students must also continue to meet all requirements of the MS Applied Geography degree upon entrance into the Accelerated Program. Students who do not follow the flight plan of graduate courses may become ineligible to continue in the accelerated program.
If you have any questions please contact the department’s Director of Graduate Studies.

The Flight Plan outlined above is intended to demonstrate one possible path to completing the degree within four years. Course selection and placement within the program may vary depending on course offerings and schedule, elective preferences, and other factors (study abroad, internship availability, etc.). Please consult your advisor for additional information about building a flight plan that works for you.
Degree Audit Report
Degree Audit reports illustrate how your completed courses fulfill the requirements of your academic plan, and which requirements are still outstanding. Degree audits also take transfer credits and test credits into account. "What-if" reports allow you to compare the courses you have completed in your current academic plan to the courses required in another academic plan. Should you have questions about either report, please consult with your academic advisor.
Flight Planner
The Flight Planner tool is available for you to create a personalized Flight Plan to graduation. Advisors have access to review your Flight Planner and can help you adjust it to ensure you remain on track to graduate in a timely manner.
