Certified School Counselor (RANK1)

Application Requirements

Applicants to the Rank I program must submit the following:

  • Completed UofL graduate application submitted at https://apply.graduate.louisville.edu/apply/
  • Official transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate coursework.  To be considered official, transcripts must be sent by the issuing institution to the UofL Graduate School. Transcripts issued to the candidate, and/or uploaded by the candidate, are considered unofficial.
  • Copy of current Kentucky license for School Counseling

Admission Requirements

  • Complete application (including all checklist items above and payment submitted).
  • Master’s degree in School Counseling from an institutionally accredited institution and Rank II status in Kentucky.
  • Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 for undergraduate work and 3.0 for graduate work.

Program admission dates:  SpringSummer or Fall semester 

Application Deadlines:  December 1 for Spring, April 1 for Summer, and August 1 for Fall

A portfolio is required for successful completion of this program.

Notes

  1. Graduates of the University of Louisville MEd in Counseling and Personnel Services program, with a concentration School Guidance Counseling, are eligible to pursue this Rank 1 programCandidates who have completed a master’s degree in School Guidance Counseling from other institutions must provide documentation, before applying for admission, that they have completed the requirements leading to the provisional and standard certificates in Kentucky. 
  2. The candidate for Rank I shall hold a KY School Counseling license and a Masters degree in School Counseling. 
  3. The Rank I classification shall require the completion of 60 semester hours of approved graduate level credit including a Masters degree. 
  4. The candidate shall plan the Rank I program in consultation with a faculty advisor in the ECPY Department prior to enrolling in Rank I courses. 
  5. Of the total number of hours on the Rank I program, at least 15 semester hours beyond the Master’s degree shall be taken at the University of LouisvilleThe remaining credit hours may be taken at the University of Louisville, or upon approval of the faculty advisor, at other institutionsThere is no stipulation as to recency of completion of Rank I credit. 
  6. All coursework for Rank I shall carry graduate credit, and no less than half shall be earned in courses open only to graduate students.   
  7. An academic average of 3.0 shall be required on the course hours submitted for Rank I, and no credit shall be accepted for courses carrying a grade lower than “C.”

Independent Study or Directed Readings may be included as approved by faculty advisor; also courses in the Advocacy section may be used here as long as they have NOT been taken in the Advocacy or Area of Emphasis sections

If the master's degree is more than 30 credit hours, the number of credit hours a student needs to complete Rank 1 may be fewer than 30 additional credit hours.
