Program Overview

The DMD-MBA dual degree program combines a comprehensive dental education with advanced training in business and leadership. The program is ideal for dental students who want the skills needed to manage people, resources, and the changing realities of today’s healthcare system.

Many students choose to pursue the MBA alongside the DMD because running a dental practice involves much more than clinical expertise. Dentists often act as small‑business owners and team leaders who manage budgeting, operations, marketing, staffing, and long‑term planning. The MBA helps students build these skills by providing tools for making informed financial decisions, managing complex teams, and navigating the business side of healthcare.

Students benefit from an efficient pathway to completing both degrees. Most students complete the MBA between the second and third years of dental school and graduate with both degrees in five (5) years of study, giving them a competitive advantage when entering the job market.

Because individual elective choices vary, the total number of credit hours for students in the dual program may differ. However, all students must complete a minimum of 243.5 credit hours. The dual degree applies nine (9) credit hours from the DMD program toward the MBA’s required elective hours (in place of MBA 680). The following table outlines the minimum number of unique credit hours required for each degree, the shared credit hours applied to both programs, and the minimum total credit hours to earn the dual degree.

Minimum Total Hours243.5

Students may apply nine (9) credit hours from the DMD program toward the nine (9) required elective credit hours in Special Topics in Business (MBA 680) to satisfy the MBA degree requirements.

Admission

Admission to the DMD-MBA dual degree program requires acceptance into both the School of Dentistry and the College of Business. Students must first apply to the School of Dentistry and be admitted as DMD students. Eligible students then apply to the MBA program during their second year of dental school. Students admitted into the DMD-MBA dual degree program are responsible for MBA tuition and are subject to MBA academic policies while enrolled in the MBA program. Dental students should consult with the School of Dentistry Office of Student Affairs to learn more about the dual DMD-MBA program prior to their third year of dental school.

Program of Study

The dual DMD-MBA program is designed to be completed in five (5) years, with students completing the MBA between the second and third years of the dental curriculum. The DMD curriculum remains unchanged, apart from a planned break between years two and three to allow for full‑time MBA enrollment.

The MBA curriculum follows the standard full‑time degree requirements outlined in the Graduate Academic Catalog, with one exception:

  1. Students do not complete the nine (9) elective credit hours listed under Special Topics in Business (MBA 680). Instead, nine (9) credit hours from the DMD curriculum satisfy the MBA elective requirement.

All other MBA degree requirements remain unchanged. Prospective students should contact the School of Dentistry Office of Student Affairs and the College of Business Graduate Programs Office for detailed guidance on the dual degree requirements prior to enrollment. The table below outlines the typical sequence of coursework required for the DMD-MBA dual degree.

Program Overview

The JD/MBA dual degree is designed for students who want to combine legal training with structured preparation in business administration. Many areas of legal practice involve organizational planning, financial decision‑making, and the evaluation of complex business structures. The MBA provides a foundation in these areas and complements the analytical and problem‑solving skills developed in the JD program. Students interested in corporate law, regulatory work, or advising organizations often find that the dual degree supports broader career pathways and long‑term professional flexibility.

This dual degree program allows students to complete the JD and MBA through a coordinated plan of study that requires a minimum of 117 total credit hours. Students satisfy the degree requirements for each program as follows:

  1. JD Degree Requirements:
    1. 81 credit hours in LAW courses and completion of all other JD degree requirements.
    2. 9 credit hours in MBA courses to satisfy upper level electives.
  2. MBA Degree Requirements:
    1. 36 credit hours in MBA courses and completion of all other MBA degree requirements.
    2. 9 credit hours in LAW courses to replace MBA 680 credit hours.

The table below summarizes the minimum credit distribution needed to complete the dual degree.

Admission to the dual degree program requires acceptance into both the Louis D. Brandeis School of Law and the College of Business. Students are responsible for tuition charged by each academic unit and are subject to the academic policies of each unit while enrolled in the respective degree programs.

Students must be admitted to the Brandeis School of Law before completing any MBA coursework they intend to apply toward the JD degree requirements. Students are strongly encouraged to apply to the MBA program before completing 45 hours of JD coursework.

Prospective students should contact the Brandeis School of Law Office of Admissions for additional information. Current JD students interested in the dual degree should consult the Brandeis School of Law Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.

Program of Study

Students must complete all degree requirements specified in the academic catalogs for both the JD and MBA programs, with the following exceptions:

Program Overview

The MD‑MBA dual degree program provides medical students with combined training in clinical practice and business management. Students complete the MD curriculum alongside the MBA—gaining skills in finance, operations, leadership, and management. MBA electives are waived because the MD curriculum includes competencies in communication, leadership, and related areas of business administration, allowing both degrees to be completed more efficiently than pursuing them separately. The program prepares future physicians to manage their own practices—many of which operate as small businesses—and to assume leadership roles in hospitals, health systems, biotechnology and medical device companies, and other health care organizations. Graduates are equipped to deliver high‑quality patient care while guiding the strategic and operational functions of the organizations they serve.

Admission

Admission to the MD‑MBA dual degree program requires acceptance into both the School of Medicine and the College of Business. Students must first apply to the School of Medicine through the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS), including submission of MCAT scores, and be admitted as MD students. Eligible students then apply to the MBA program during the second year of medical school. Students admitted into the MD-MBA dual degree program are responsible for MBA tuition and are subject to MBA academic policies while enrolled in the MBA program. Prospective and current MD students should contact the School of Medicine MD‑MBA Program Director or Associate Program Director for additional information. To learn more about the MBA program and its admission process, students may contact the College of Business Graduate Programs Recruiting Manager.

Dual Degree Requirements

The MD‑MBA dual degree is delivered through an integrated curriculum that allows students to complete requirements for both degrees in fewer total credit hours than would be required if the degrees were completed separately. This structure is made possible by allowing selected courses and training components from the MD curriculum to satisfy electives for the MBA when they meet the same learning outcomes. In this format, the dual degree may be completed in five (5) years with a minimum of 205.5 total credit hours.  Students must also complete all remaining degree requirements for both the MD and the MBA, except where those requirements are modified by the approved dual degree structure. Students should consult with the MD-MBA Program Director or Associate Program Director to learn more.
